What is ΑΓΡ?No, it isn't arp! Those are our Greek letters, meaning Alpha Gamma Rho. We also say AGR for short. That is a fitting abbreviation, too: AGRiculture. ΑΓΡ is the nation's premier agriculture fraternity, with chapters located at universities across the nation. We are a social/professional fraternity with the sole purpose of making better men and producing competent leaders for the agricultural and food/fiber industries of today and beyond. The fraternity was founded in 1908. The ΒΞ (Beta Xi, thus the BX portion of our web address) chapter at Texas Tech was colonized in 1983. We became a full-fledged chapter in 1987. We are also members of the Texas Tech Interfraternity Council, which oversees all Greek fraternities on campus. That means we are a Greek fraternity, not just a college organization that uses Greek letters.
We aren't just a bunch of farm boys! The bond that strengthens our fraternity is our members. Our undergraduate brothers typically prepare for a career in agriculture or have a background directly related to some sort of production agriculture and the food/fiber industries. But you do not necessarily have to study production agriculture to join AGR. Because we are a professional fraternity, we are concerned with and focus on developing and promoting your leadership skills and career goals both during college and after graduation. Our members range from Secretaries of Agriculture to CEOs of major corporations to thousands of farmers, ranchers, range/wildlife and fisheries experts and food science professionals worldwide. All of those brothers, regardless of which school they attended or which chapters they are members of, stand ready to help you succeed in college, in AGR, and in your selected profession after graduation.
We stress scholarship! We know the real reason you're in college: to get an education to further your career opportunities and earning potential after graduation. In order to accomplish that, you must do well academically. Because all brothers share similiar backgrounds and generally pursue similar career paths, peer study groups benefit all members. Beta Xi has a long-standing history of high scholastics at Texas Tech. We regularly receive awards for the highest overall grade point average among all Greek fraternities at Tech, and we're almost always in the top three.
There is NO PLEDGING!One of the greatest apprehensions about joining a Greek fraternity is the horror stories most have heard regarding the pledging process, particularly as it pertains to hazing or demeaning activities. When you join AGR, you join as a member with equal standing to all brothers that have come before you. You can attend all meetings and activities, and you can vote on all issues pertaining to the undergraduate chapter. Most importantly, however, is that there is absolutely NO HAZING. The only difference between a new member and an established member is that all new brothers must go through a semester-long development period. During this first semester of membership, new brothers learn the customs, traditions and history of ΑΓΡ as a fraternity, as well as the traditions and history of Beta Xi chapter and Texas Tech University.
