What is AGR?AGR stands for Alpha Gamma Rho. Our Greek letters can be seen above and left. We are the nation's premier agricultural fraternity, with chapters located at universities across the nation. We are a social/professional fraternity who's sole purpose is to make better men and to produce competent leaders for the agriculture industry of today and beyond. The AGR Fraternity was founded in 1908, while the Texas Tech chapter was colonized in 1983. Beta Xi became a full-fledged chapter in 1987.
We aren't just a bunch of farm boys! The bond that strengthens our fraternity is our members. Our active members are preparing for a career in the agriculture and food-and-fiber related industries, and you don't have to study production agriculture to join AGR. Because we are a professional fraternity, we are concerned with promoting your leadership skills and career goals both during college and after graduation. Our members range from Secretaries of Agriculture to CEOs of major companies to thousands of farmers and ranchers worldwide, and all of them stand ready to help you succeed in college, in AGR, and in the real world after graduation. We strive for excellence!Across the nation, AGR has a history of excellence. Visit our Honors page and find out more about some of the awards Beta Xi has received.
We stress scholarship! We know the real reason you're in college: to graduate and get a job. In order to accomplish that, you must do well academically. Because all brothers are pursuing similar career paths, peer study groups benefit all members. Beta Xi has a long standing history of high scholastics at Texas Tech University. We regularly receive awards for being the top fraternity in grades on the Texas Tech campus, and are almost always in the top three.
There is NO PLEDGING!That's right! When you join AGR, you join as a member with equal standing to all brothers that have come before you. You can attend all activities, vote on all issues, and perhaps most importantly - there is absolutely NO HAZING. The only difference between a new member and an established brother is that all new members must go through a semester-long development period. During this semester, new members learn the customs, traditions, and history of AGR, as well as some of the traditions and history of Beta Xi Chapter and Texas Tech University.
